Tweaking the upstairs

New sofa Museum/bedroom upstairs

When we added that 8′ of width to the basement and first floor, we got an extra addition upstairs as well. With everything else finished, Blair is turning his skills to that room.

What was the museum for Blair’s mechanical toys, quack medical devices and other esoterica will now also house the near-fossilized owners.

That box in the foreground is the bed base and the grid on the far wall is the beginning of lighted glass cabinet. Meanwhile downstairs I replaced the aging leather furniture with new.

Time to Christen

A drumming group this Friday and an Oscars party on Sunday night will help us christen our new music/computer room. We have many helpful friends and tolerant neighbors to thank for the completion of this hands-on project which turned out just as we pictured it. In case you missed the progress reports, you can see them here.

People wonder at how just eight feet of addional space (thanks to a variance granted by the city) could make a house feel so much more spacious. We have to thank Luke Kautz for his helpful architectural hints. After the spring thaw we intend to deal with the damage the construction did to the landscaping.

The window seat in the new room holds lots of extraneous instruments while providing great seating for groups of drummers.

Renovation Update

Here’s an update on our music room addition. The floor is in, Blair’s building the black shelves, drawers and window seats that will be installed in the front of the room.

At present it has a distinct dance hall look. That should fade some as Blair adds the cabinetry and I start reinstalling the artwork, books and computer.

All in all a fun project that makes the house seem much larger and the space much more inviting.

In case you missed our last boast, here’s a picture of the redone "casbah" bathroom complete with polymer-inlaid walnut bowl sink and copper tub surround. We let our imaginations run wild in this little bathroom and it’s turned out to be a fabulous place to take a candlelit bath.

And here’s the link back to the beginning of the renovation.

The house addition…December 2004

The new music/computer room is taking shape with the installation of the wood floor. Work was interrupted by the daylong power outtage and ice storm. Next comes the rest of the cabinets and built-ins.
